The UBC Master of Data Science (MDS) is a 10-month professional degree program. The MDS program was developed by the combined expertise of the UBC departments of Computer Science and Statistics to help meet a growing need for data scientists by producing skilled professionals who can turn data into knowledge.

Data science is the process of extracting value from that data through reproducible and auditable processes. Utilizing descriptive and prescriptive techniques, students extract and analyze data from both unstructured and structured forms and then communicate the findings of those analyses in ways to enable organizations to make informed decisions based on data.

The cohort-based MDS program provides practical, real-world-applicable experience via integrating real-world data sets across the curriculum. As well, the MDS program ends with a capstone project allowing students to apply their newly acquired knowledge, while working alongside other students to address a question facing a capstone partner’s organization.

In addition, courses are taught by a core team of faculty dedicated to teaching MDS full-time and providing support to students throughout the program.

UBC Film is a wild ride. You don’t just talk about movies here, you make them, usually on no sleep and way too much coffee - that's for me anyway. It’s competitive to get in, and honestly, it stays competitive once you’re there. But that pressure forces you to grow and learn fast. By second year, our class felt more like a production crew than a random group of students.

The professors are a mix: some hardcore industry people, some full-on art film types, which makes for great discussion and projects. The equipment and facilities are good if you treat them right, and the tech staff are the real mvps when something breaks five minutes before your shoot.

This isn’t a program that hands you a career on a silver platter. It’s about learning how to tell stories that actually mean something, and then figuring out how to pull them off. You’ll freeze on outdoor shoots, lose files, rebuild sets with duct tape, and somehow still make something you’re proud of.

If you love film enough to put up with all that you’ll come out the other side with serious skills and a few stories of your own. This was an amazing program.

As a student in UBC’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, I found the experience to be intellectually stimulating and professionally oriented. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on health equity, Indigenous cultural safety, anti-racism and inclusive practice, which I found meaningful and timely for the healthcare environment. The clinical placements start early and offer exposure to a variety of settings, allowing me to apply theory and build practical skills in real-world healthcare teams. I also appreciated the research opportunities and multidisciplinary collaborations embedded in the program.
