University of British Columbia’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program prepares students with advanced professional knowledge and skills to support individuals, families, and communities while addressing systemic inequities and promoting social justice. The program is organized around three fields of practice: Health and Social Care, Family and Children’s Services, and Social and International Development. Across these areas, students engage in coursework that combines critical analysis, social care, and policy-focused perspectives to strengthen their ability to respond to complex social challenges and advocate for meaningful change.
The Advanced MSW program emphasizes professional practice through a combination of specialized coursework and field education placements tailored to each student’s concentration. Practicum experiences in community agencies and social service organizations allow students to apply classroom learning in real-world settings while developing advanced competencies in assessment, intervention, advocacy, and leadership. Most students complete a course-based program integrated with an advanced practicum, though thesis options may also be available for those pursuing research-focused study. Graduates emerge with a strong social justice orientation, evidence-informed practice skills, and the ability to contribute effectively across diverse social work environments.
