Those already working in counselling can upgrade their skills in the social and community service fields with Vancouver Community College’s Counselling Skills Foundations: Mental Health & Addictions Certificate. Graduates of this three year program will be learn new ways of being empathetic while working with others, how to acknowledge their own assumptions, and better their communication skills.
This program is designed to provide learners with practical and experiential learning, grounded in evidence-based practices. Courses are a blend of lectures, clinical simulations, and field trips among others, and concludes with a a practicum in which on-site support and supervision from a supervisor will aid in the development of said skills. Program organizers are dedicated to valuing and demonstrating inclusive practices, acknowledging and appreciating their positions, approaching work with a trauma informed lens, and agree to co-create a learning environment that supports respect, accountability, and humility.
Admission Requirements
- Grade 12 English with a minimum grade of C+, or equivalent.
- The Basic Counselling Skills course with at least a C grade.
- VCC Counselling Skills Reference Form and Rubric from a volunteer or employment supervisor.
