Vancouver Film School’s Game Design program offers a comprehensive, hands-on education for aspiring game designers, providing the skills and knowledge needed to create engaging and immersive gaming experiences. The program combines creativity with technical expertise, covering essential areas such as game theory, pre-production techniques, storytelling, game art, level design, and coding. Students will gain practical experience by working on real-world projects, including the creation of playable games in industry-standard software like Unity.

Taught by experienced professionals, the curriculum is designed to foster collaboration and teamwork, preparing students to work in dynamic, multidisciplinary environments. As part of their education, students will engage in detailed design documentation, front-end interfaces, and game development processes, while also specializing in areas such as coding, art, or level design. The program culminates in a major team-based project, where students apply their skills to design and execute a fully-realized interactive experience. With opportunities for play-testing and industry presentations, graduates are equipped with the portfolio and experience necessary to enter the competitive world of game design.

I graduated from the game design program in 2012 and landed my first job in the industry, quite literally, the day after my graduation. The program and school really pushed me to improve my skills and challenged my creativity in almost every possible way.

The program is worth it if you are willing to put in the work.

A recent graduate of the Writing for Film and TV program, I was working in the oil industry prior and have three kids, so it wasn't exactly a piece of cake to just drop everything and follow a dream. I talked to the head of the department several times before coming (Michael Baser - very helpful and eminently personable), asking hard questions and realizing this would ultimately be a leap of faith. I don't regret it for a second. My experience was that the teachers cared deeply about us, the quality of our writing, and our ultimate success as professionals. I've been writing for years, but I still learned a TON at VFS - not only how to write, but how to effectively network within the industry and, most importantly, how to discipline my writing habits and structure myself for the actual business of writing. And I walked out with a wicked writing portfolio, with samples across multiple media formats from film to TV to advertising and beyond. But keep in mind, this isn't the typical post-secondary education-by-spoon-feed; it's real-world and intensely practical. You only get out if you put in. I can't speak for all departments, but the Writing dept runs a fantastic ship!
