As a Police Foundations graduate, you play an active role in the law enforcement system, ensuring public safety by maintaining law and order: protecting members of the public and their property; and preventing, detecting and investigating crime.

This reality-based curriculum is taught by former police officers with extensive investigative experience. You’ll gain practical, in-field experience via volunteer opportunities with municipal police services and local service agencies and hands-on experiential learning in the Justice Studies Simulation Lab.

Graduates or students enrolled in their last level of Niagara College’s Police Foundations program can gain a Protection, Security and Investigation OR Community and Justice Services (Correctional Worker) diploma with 8 additional months of study, based on available space and admission requirements.

What You’ll Learn

  • Complete all tasks in compliance with pertinent legislation, as well as policing standards, regulations and guidelines.
  • Analyze all relevant information and make effective and legally defensible decisions in accordance with ethical and professional standards.
  • Be accountable for one’s actions when carrying out all tasks.
  • Develop and implement ongoing effective strategies for personal and professional development.
  • Ensure the respect of human rights and freedoms in all interactions.
  • Work co-operatively in multidisciplinary teams to achieve mutual goals.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of community policing strategies.

After attending Brock University for four years and graduating from the Business Communications program I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do next. We had a spokesperson from Niagara College come into our 4th year class to tell us about the Public Relations post-grad degree. I was turned onto the fact it was a one-year program that had a co-op/field placement to get real work experience in the field.

I enrolled in the program and it was extremely beneficial to my professional development. In university I learned a lot of theoretical and writing skills, but lacked a lot of hands-on experience. Niagara College got right into the meat of it and exposed me to a lot of things I never learned in university. We had courses that taught us how to use Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, how to develop a basic website, writing for social media/PR and much more.

Overall I was extremely satisfied with my experience and I ended up landing a full-time job at the place I did my work placement at. Several years later I've moved along well in my career in a large part thanks to Niagara College's PR program.
