The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at the University of Windsor is structured to provide students with a strong academic and professional foundation in social work practice. The first two years, known as the Pre-Social Work or pre-professional phase, introduce students to key concepts in social welfare, human needs, diversity, and social issues. During this stage, students also complete coursework in areas such as academic writing, quantitative methods, and interdisciplinary subjects including psychology, sociology, political science, and gender studies. At the end of the second year, students apply to enter the Professional Years, where their focus shifts more directly to social work theory and applied practice.
The program emphasizes a broad and interdisciplinary approach, preparing students to understand complex social systems and the diverse experiences of individuals and communities. Foundational courses explore social welfare structures, social work practice, and issues related to equity and diversity, while elective options allow students to deepen their knowledge across complementary fields. By building critical thinking, research, and communication skills in the early years, the program prepares students for advanced study and hands-on learning in the final stages of the degree, ultimately supporting their development into effective and socially responsive practitioners.
