About
Voice Acting
Canada’s voice actors work in film and television, animation, video games, audiobooks, documentaries, advertising, dubbing and online learning. It is a substantial creative market: Canada’s film and television production industry generated $10.2 billion in production activity and supported more than 181,000 jobs in 2024–2025. The country’s video-game industry contributes another $5.5 billion to the economy.
Most voice acting is freelance and secured through auditions. Earnings can vary considerably depending on the performer, the production and how the recording will be used. The Government of Canada reports a median wage of $24.13 per hour for voice-over actors and related performers, although professional work is often paid through session and usage fees rather than a regular hourly wage. Many voice actors also move between commercial, animation, narration and other types of work.
Voice acting courses teach students how to interpret scripts, work with a microphone, develop characters and perform commercial and narrative reads. Programs may also include audition training, studio recording and demo production, along with practical guidance on agents, contracts, marketing and setting up a home studio.
Whether you want to build a full-time career, add voice-over work to an existing acting practice or simply develop your skills, Canada offers voice acting courses for a range of experience levels and career goals.
