The University of Ottawa’s Master of Science in Nursing program prepares registered nurses for advanced practice roles and doctoral studies through a rigorous, theory- and research-based curriculum. The program equips students with the leadership skills needed to improve the quality of nursing care across diverse healthcare settings while addressing health-related phenomena that affect individuals, families, groups, and communities. Offered entirely through distance education, the program allows nurses across Canada to pursue graduate studies without relocating, with all coursework delivered via video-conferencing. Students are required to hold a valid nursing license in their province or territory, and all clinical placements must be completed within Canada.
Courses explore the theoretical foundations and research methodologies central to advanced nursing practice, including knowledge development, statistical analysis, pathophysiology, and clinical decision-making. Students gain expertise in health assessment, diagnostics, and therapeutics, with specialized courses designed for those pursuing Nurse Practitioner competencies. Practicums provide hands-on experience that integrates theory with clinical application, fostering advanced clinical judgment and autonomy. Through this comprehensive distance learning model, graduates are prepared to assume leadership positions, contribute to nursing research, and advance primary health care delivery across Canada.

This program had a good balance of theory and practical work. We did programming, embedded systems, networking — a bit of everything without it being too shallow. Group projects were a lot, and some courses were tougher than others, but the small-class vibe made it easy to get help. If you like building things and want something more applied than straight CS, it’s a good fit.
