St. Lawrence College’s Social Service Worker diploma is a two-year Ontario College program that prepares students for entry into frontline roles within a wide range of social service settings. The program equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills needed to support individuals and communities facing challenges such as mental health concerns, substance use, poverty, homelessness, trauma, abuse, settlement difficulties, and educational barriers. Through applied, skills-based learning led by experienced faculty, students develop a strong foundation in ethical, client-centred, and professional social service practice.
A key feature of the program is its emphasis on experiential learning through two field placement opportunities, which allow students to apply classroom knowledge in real community environments. Placement settings may include shelters, mental health services, employment assistance programs, schools, residential care, long-term care facilities, and seniors outreach initiatives. These experiences support professional growth while preparing graduates for eligibility to register with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and work as Registered Social Service Workers in Ontario.
