You have an eye for aesthetics, love the easy banter of getting to know someone new, and get a thrill helping people look and feel their best. Makeup artists, lash technicians, estheticians, and other beauty professionals channel their creativity and style into a wide range of beauty services, providing their clients with much-needed self-care. It’s a field that blends the art of creative expression with personal service and business savvy – one with ample opportunity for eager stylists starting out.
Like many skilled trades, the beauty and cosmetology field is seeing growing demand, with job openings set to gradually outpace available talent over the next five plus years. This is, after all, not work that is easily outsourced or automated. Between 2022 and 2031, Canada’s Job Bank is projecting more than 63,000 new job openings for hair stylists and barbers, estheticians and electrologists, and related occupations. The average esthetician’s starting hourly rate is between $18-20, according to Glassdoor, Indeed and the federal government’s data – with the potential to earn considerably more through tips, profit-sharing, or as a business owner.
From one-day workshops to two-year college diploma programs, schools across the country (including online beauty schools) offer a wide range of cosmetology courses. Schools might hold a variety of accreditations and designations, but there is no one mandatory credential in Canada.
While hairstylist is a job that requires trade certification (and has its own ranking specific to the Best Hair Schools), for roles like makeup artist, esthetician, or cosmetologist, regulations vary across provinces: students must complete required training and pass a licensing exam in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Meanwhile, in B.C. and Ontario, certification is not mandatory.
CourseCompare has developed a beauty school ranking that takes into account the diversity of programs available, technical training, and student reviews, among other factors. For the purposes of this list, we have focused on esthetician, cosmetology, makeup artistry, and nail technician programs.
Read on for the best beauty and cosmetology schools in Canada of 2025.

The Canadian Beauty Academy
Previously known as The Salon Professional Academy, The Canadian Beauty Academy (TCBA) is located in Winnipeg. It offers diploma programs in Esthetics, Hairstyling, Nail Technology and Skin Care Technician, as well as Certificate programs in Lash Technician and Makeup Artistry.
What Sets The Canadian Beauty Academy Apart
TCBA’s Esthetics program combines theory, technical skills and hands-training, giving students real-world experience and the opportunity to learn from industry experts. The program is designed to help nurture students’ creativity and help them thrive in a small, supportive learning environment. TCBA’s Nail Technology and Skincare Technician programs also provide comprehensive learning and hands-on experience to set students up for success. Students perform services on real clients at TCBA’s Salon & Spa.
Trade certifications for professions in esthetics are compulsory in Manitoba, which means that a person must be a registered apprentice or hold a valid Certificate of Qualification to work in the province. For estheticians registering as an apprentice, enrolment in or completion of technical training is required. In addition, both a provincial certification theory exam and practical exam are required for this trade.
An accredited school, TCBA offers two government exam prep courses: Nail Technician and Skincare Technician. TCBA’s two-day exam prep courses are also open to practitioners who are moving to Winnipeg from another province or country and want to work in Manitoba.
