Bow Valley College’s Social Work Diploma program is a two-year, practice-focused credential designed to prepare students for professional roles in social work and community support. The program equips learners with foundational knowledge in social work theory, critical thinking, self-reflection, and advocacy, with a strong emphasis on social justice and supporting individuals, families, and communities through change. Students explore key areas such as psychology, sociology, Indigenous studies, mental health, trauma, addiction, and human development, while building a deep understanding of anti-oppressive and client-centred practice.

The program integrates classroom learning with extensive hands-on experience, including multiple practicum preparation courses and two major field placements that provide direct exposure to real-world social service environments. Graduates are prepared to work in a variety of settings such as non-profit organizations, schools, healthcare facilities, addiction services, senior care, residential programs, and government agencies. Through this blend of academic study and applied training, students develop the skills needed to conduct assessments, facilitate group and family work, support community development, and engage effectively in policy-informed and ethically grounded practice.
