With the current pace of construction in Ontario, there is a high demand for skilled equipment operators to support this industry. Completion of the Heavy Construction Equipment Operation program will position students for success in entering the construction industry.

This program includes a significant amount of hands-on experience, safely performing basic maintenance and operating various pieces of large equipment at Conestoga’s training sites (South Guelph or Brantford Airport depending on program location). Learners will also be exposed to compact equipment and paving operations. This practical experience is complemented with the related theory including environmental practices, soils, concrete and asphalt, surveying, and site plans. By the end of the program, students will be well-prepared for success as they enter employment in the heavy construction and paving industries as an equipment operator.

As a graduate of this program, students will have the opportunity to receive an automatic exemption from all of the apprenticeship in-school training for the three Heavy Equipment Operator trades (Tractor-Loader-Backhoe, Excavator, Dozer) should they choose to pursue that career pathway.

What You’ll Learn

  • Operate a variety of compact and heavy equipment used in construction and paving environments efficiently and by industry operator specifications and safe practices.
  • Operate various pieces of earth-moving equipment on a work site in a competent manner by operator specifications and safe practices.
  • Complete preventative maintenance and field repairs on heavy and compact equipment to ensure efficient operation by recommended maintenance schedules and procedures.
  • Apply basic survey techniques to interpret grade elevation in compliance with requirements set out in blueprints and/or site plans.
  • Apply basic business practices appropriate to the heavy construction and paving industries to ensure optimal operational efficiency.
  • Complete all work in an environmentally responsible manner ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and ethical considerations.

This program has been very poorly administered from a scheduling standpoint.

The course is divided into 5 levels with scheduled breaks between each level. When Levels 3 and 4 became available, I registered and arranged my vacation time with work around the published schedule and the week break between levels.

Only one week before Level 3 was supposed to begin, the start date was delayed by a week. This now places my previously approved vacation during the final week of the level.

What is even more frustrating is that there has been no clear communication on whether the remaining levels will also shift by a week or whether they plan to remove the scheduled break between Levels 3 and 4 entirely.

Most students in part-time evening programs are balancing work and personal commitments, so reliable scheduling and timely communication are important. Delays can happen, but changing dates with very little notice and failing to provide a clear updated schedule shows a lack of organization and consideration for students.

conestoga refuses to give me back my money due to the fact that i didnt withdrew on time, despite showing my health related isses why i was unable to withdrew on time, they still refuses which means to me that they dont really care about international student wellbeing. Also, during exams i didnt know the camera didnt caption my student card properly, despite the professor seeing me bring it out of my pocket i was giving zero for someone learning how to use computer to write exams for the first time, because of that i have to pay addictional $1000+ to rewrite the course just because the camera didnt capture the card properly how ridiculous. Conestoga will do anything to rip international student. I wont recommend this school even to my enemy.
