The Master of Science Course-Based Nurse Practitioner program at McMaster University is designed to prepare registered nurses for advanced practice and licensure in the Extended Class as Nurse Practitioners. This program combines graduate-level coursework in nursing leadership, evidence-based practice, and applied research with specialized clinical training through the Council of Ontario Universities Programs in Nursing (COUPN) Nurse Practitioner curriculum. Students complete a blend of McMaster Graduate Nursing courses and COUPN NP courses that build the theoretical, research, and practical foundation required for advanced nursing roles.

Through a rigorous combination of academic study and hands-on clinical experience in primary care settings, students develop the knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. The program emphasizes leadership in nursing practice, critical evaluation of research, and the integration of evidence into clinical decision-making. Graduates of McMaster’s Master of Science Course-Based Nurse Practitioner program are well-prepared to meet the standards for Extended Class registration and to excel as competent, reflective, and innovative Nurse Practitioners in diverse health care environments.

McMaster University’s Engineering program has a common first year, which I actually appreciated—it gave me time to explore different disciplines before choosing my stream. It’s definitely rigorous, and the workload can be intense, but it pushes you to think critically and manage your time well. The community is collaborative rather than competitive, and there are plenty of design teams and clubs to get involved in. Overall, it’s demanding but rewarding if you’re ready to put in the effort.

As a graduate of the Integrated Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences program, I found it to be a great mix of engineering, health, and real-world problem solving. The program is project-heavy, so you build practical skills fast, and the interdisciplinary focus really sets you apart. It’s challenging, but it prepares you well for industry, grad school, or professional programs.
