Algoma University’s Bachelor of Social Work program offers a generalist education that prepares students to work with individuals, families, groups, and communities across diverse practice settings. Grounded in a strong commitment to social justice, equity, and anti-oppressive practice, the program emphasizes Indigenous, structural, critical feminist, and anti-racist perspectives, with particular attention to the realities of northern, rural, remote, and Franco-Ontarian communities. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of how social systems, health services, and community supports differ across contexts, while developing the skills needed for entry-level professional practice in Canada.

A distinctive feature of the program is its location on the former site of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School, which creates meaningful opportunities for learning through engagement with Indigenous knowledge, community voices, and the lived experiences of Survivors. Through coursework, experiential learning, and community partnerships, students explore topics such as crisis intervention, family and child welfare, and the lasting impacts of colonization, including the residential school system. The program integrates diverse teaching approaches, including land-based learning, community engagement, and applied practice experiences, while aligning with professional ethical standards. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, education, social services, and community organizations, particularly in regions where skilled social workers are in high demand.
