The Master of Nursing (MN) program at Lakehead University is a dynamic coursework-based graduate program that integrates academic study with clinical practice to prepare nurses for advanced roles in health care. Designed for registered nurses seeking to expand their expertise, the program combines core nursing theory and research with practical, hands-on clinical experiences. Students engage with technology-enabled learning through synchronous online delivery and in-person components, fostering both academic flexibility and professional collaboration. The MN Nurse Practitioner Specialization, approved by the College of Nurses of Ontario, provides a direct pathway for students to achieve licensure as a Registered Nurse (Extended Class) Nurse Practitioner, qualifying graduates to apply for Extended Class registration as a Nurse Practitioner in Ontario.
Through a curriculum grounded in leadership, evidence-based practice, and advanced clinical skills, the Master of Nursing program cultivates practitioners who are equipped to meet the diverse and evolving needs of patients and communities. Students learn to synthesize theoretical and practical knowledge, apply advanced assessment and diagnostic techniques, and engage in therapeutic relationships across varied populations. Emphasis is placed on developing critical appraisal skills, contributing to nursing research, and leading transformative change in health care systems. With mandatory on-campus seminars, extensive clinical placements within Lakehead University’s geographic boundaries, and a culminating 455-hour practicum, graduates emerge as competent, compassionate, and innovative Nurse Practitioners ready to advance the future of primary health care in Ontario and beyond.
