Canadore College, in partnership with Seneca College and Carson Dunlop and Associates and in cooperation with the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI), offers a 10-course Home Inspection program designed to prepare students for careers as professional home inspectors. The program follows the Standards of Practice established by the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) and the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors (CAHPI), ensuring students learn a consistent and recognized approach to residential inspections. It also meets the Professional Home/Property Inspector Occupational Standards developed by the Canadian Home Inspectors and Building Officials Steering Committee for National Standards (CHIBO), providing students with a solid foundation in both technical knowledge and professional practices.
The curriculum focuses on practical knowledge of residential building systems, including roofing, structural components, electrical and heating systems, air conditioning and heat pumps, plumbing, insulation, exterior, and interior elements. Students learn how each system is constructed, how failures can occur, and the causes and consequences of these issues. The program emphasizes identifying signs of non-performance due to age, deferred maintenance, weather damage, or poor workmanship, while also teaching professional communication skills to report findings effectively. This hands-on, detailed approach ensures graduates are prepared to meet industry expectations and stand out in the growing home inspection field.
Admission Requirements
- 19 years of age or older or if you have earned an Ontario Secondary School Diploma/Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent.
What You’ll Learn
- Inspect and evaluate residential systems including roofing, structure, electrical, plumbing, heating, and HVAC.
- Identify causes, consequences, and signs of system failures, maintenance issues, and construction defects.

The teachers are very knowledgable in the trade takes about real issues are they came across and how they solve them. they truly cared about their students and them succeeding in the program. The hands on shop projects, one of my favourite parts because you get to take what you learned and physically do it in class And the walk-through step-by-step to make sure you understand the procedures before moving onto a next topic.

During my time as a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a student, has made a tremendous impact on my life. This impact is one that I will carry into the future as I myself advance in my professional studies
