Home Inspection

Durham College, in partnership with Seneca College and Carson Dunlop and Associates, and in cooperation with the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI), offers a comprehensive 10-course Home Inspection program designed to prepare students for careers as professional home inspectors. The program follows the Standards of Practice of the American Society of Home Inspectors and the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors (ASHI/CAHPI), ensuring students learn a consistent, industry-recognized approach. It also aligns with the Professional Home/Property Inspector Occupational Standards established by the Canadian Home Inspectors and Building Officials Steering Committee for National Standards (CHIBO), providing a strong foundation in both technical knowledge and professional practice.

Students gain practical knowledge of residential building systems, including roofing, structural elements, electrical and heating systems, air conditioning and heat pumps, plumbing, insulation, exterior, and interior components. The curriculum is designed to teach how each system is constructed, how it can fail, and the causes and implications of these failures. By focusing on real-world inspection skills, students learn to identify issues arising from age, maintenance, weather, or poor workmanship, and develop the professional communication skills needed to report their findings accurately. This practical, hands-on approach equips graduates with the expertise required to succeed in the growing home inspection industry.

Admission Requirements

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) OR Mature Student Status.

What You’ll Learn
