Community Worker (Accelerated)

George Brown’s Community Worker (Accelerated) diploma is an intensive one-year program designed for individuals who already hold a college diploma or university degree and are seeking to build a career in community work. Grounded in principles of social justice, human rights, and anti-oppressive practice, the program prepares students to engage with diverse, urban communities facing complex social challenges. Through a fast-paced and immersive curriculum, students explore issues such as poverty, housing, food justice, immigration, and settlement, while developing the ability to respond to evolving community needs with professionalism and adaptability.

The program combines classroom learning with supervised field placements, allowing students to apply theory to real-world community settings while building valuable professional networks. Learning is highly interactive, featuring dialogue-based classes, group activities, guest panels, and collaboration with community partners who contribute to teaching and placement opportunities. Students develop key skills in counselling, group facilitation, conflict mediation, community organizing, advocacy, and policy analysis, along with strong research and critical thinking abilities. Graduates are equipped to design and implement community-based initiatives, support marginalized populations, and contribute to meaningful social change across a range of community organizations and services.
