The Class 1 Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) program at Taylor Pro College is designed to prepare aspiring commercial drivers for a successful career in the trucking industry while meeting the requirements for obtaining a Class 1 Commercial BC Driver’s License. Approved by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), this comprehensive program combines classroom instruction, practical yard training, and extensive behind-the-wheel experience. Students develop a strong understanding of commercial vehicle operations, safety regulations, trip planning, vehicle inspections, hours of service, cargo securement, and air brake systems, all while learning from experienced ICBC-licensed instructors.

Through hands-on training and real-world driving experience, students build the confidence and professional skills required to operate tractor-trailers safely in a variety of driving conditions. The curriculum emphasizes defensive driving, fuel-efficient techniques, mountain and highway driving, emergency response procedures, and advanced vehicle handling skills. In addition to mastering yard manoeuvres, coupling procedures, and pre-trip inspections, students have the opportunity to use the college’s tractor-trailer for their ICBC Class 1 road test, ensuring they are fully prepared to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities to a certified examiner.
