Class 1 MELT Program

MELT for class 1 driver’s licence applicants is a prerequisite for all ICBC class 1 road testing.  BC’s program will include best practices from other Canadian jurisdictions and emphasize safe operating practices for mountainous geography and diverse driving conditions to ensure commercial drivers are prepared for BC’s highway network and the changing weather patterns encountered in the mountains.

This comprehensive program includes a total of 14 theory sessions, totaling 54 hours of classroom instruction, designed to provide a strong foundational understanding of commercial driving. In addition, students will participate in 8 yard sessions (16 hours) focused on practical skills such as vehicle inspections and backing maneuvers. The program also offers 17 in-cab sessions, amounting to 66 hours of hands-on driving experience with a qualified instructor. To prepare students for real-world conditions, the course includes 2 mountain driving trips (20 hours), exposing them to challenging terrain and enhancing their confidence behind the wheel. Each student receives a detailed 500-page manual for reference and study, and the use of a truck is provided for the ICBC road test, ensuring a seamless transition from training to licensing.
