MD/PhD students at the University of Ottawa exemplify the multi-disciplinary nature of the ongoing educational and scientific activities. Students will be exposed to a spectrum of physician-scientists’ activities at regional, national and international levels.

Students will start their training through the undergraduate curriculum in the MD program. During the time normally allotted to an elective in the MD program, MD/PhD students will instead take one graduate program course that will count toward the PhD program. Students will learn in the MD program for year two in the undergraduate curriculum in Medicine. During the time normally allotted to an elective in the MD program, MD/PhD students who do not hold a Masters degree will take a second graduate program course. After the completion of year two, students transfer from the MD to the PhD program and will begin summer laboratory work in a supervisor’s lab.

In the third year, students complete the requirements of the Seminar course. Through years four and five, students are working in the lab on their thesis, presenting at the end of the fifth year. Students will formally leave the graduate program and return to medical school during the last two years of the undergraduate MD curriculum.

Admission Requirements

  • Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Successfully completed at least 3 years of full-time studies in any undergraduate program leading to a university bachelor’s degree.
  • Successful completion of CASPer.

I’m in Civil Engineering at uOttawa, and it’s tough. The workload is heavy, deadlines pile up fast, and you’re expected to figure a lot of things out on your own. Some courses feel outdated or overly theoretical, and group projects can be frustrating when not everyone pulls their weight.

That said, the program does prepare you well for real civil work. You do a lot of design, labs, and practical problem-solving, especially in upper years. The co-op program is the main reason most people stick with it—Ottawa has solid opportunities in construction, infrastructure, and government. It’s not glamorous and it’s definitely not easy, but if you can handle the grind, you’ll come out with skills that actually matter in industry.

I’m currently in engineering at uOttawa, and overall it’s been a pretty solid experience. The program is definitely challenging, but it feels like you’re actually learning useful skills rather than just grinding for no reason. The workload can be heavy, especially during midterm and finals season, but it’s manageable if you stay on top of things.

One of the best parts is the co-op program. Being in Ottawa makes it easier to find placements in tech, government, or research, which is a huge plus. Professors are hit or miss, but most are knowledgeable and willing to help if you reach out. Overall, it’s a good program if you’re ready to work hard and want real experience before graduating.
