Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)

The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at Trent University is a four-year degree that combines foundational academic study with professional training, offered at both the Peterborough and Durham campuses. In the first two years, students build an interdisciplinary understanding of contemporary social issues, while the final two Professional Years focus on integrating theory with practice. Grounded in social justice, human rights, and cultural awareness, the program emphasizes key principles such as decolonization, Indigenization, anti-racism, intersectionality, and sustainability. Through small class sizes and close collaboration with award-winning faculty, students engage in meaningful discussions and develop the knowledge and perspective needed for ethical and effective social work practice.

During the Professional Years, students complete more than 700 hours of supervised field placement in diverse settings, including mental health organizations, community agencies, shelters, and counselling services. These hands-on experiences allow students to apply their learning in real-world contexts while building practical skills in direct practice, leadership, and critical thinking. Supported by a rigorous curriculum that integrates research, theory, and applied learning, graduates emerge well-prepared for a wide range of social work careers. As a CASWE-accredited program, Trent’s BSW equips students with the professional competence, social responsibility, and commitment required to make meaningful contributions to individuals, families, and communities.
