The Master of Social Work (MSW) program at the University of Toronto is a two-year professional degree designed for students who hold a non-BSW undergraduate degree and are seeking to build a strong foundation in social work theory and practice. The first year focuses on core competencies, including social policy and welfare in the Canadian context, foundational theories and values that inform practice, and hands-on skill development through practice laboratories. Students gain experience working with individuals, families, groups, and communities, while also developing research skills for evidence-based practice. Foundational workshops in equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigenous learnings further strengthen students’ understanding of culturally responsive and socially accountable practice.

In the second year, students have the opportunity to specialize in a chosen field such as Children and Their Families, Human Services Management and Leadership, Mental Health and Health, Social Justice and Diversity, or Social Work in Gerontology. Advanced coursework is complemented by extensive practicum placements, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings and deepen their professional expertise. The program emphasizes critical thinking, leadership, and interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing graduates for impactful roles across a wide range of social service sectors, policy environments, and community-based organizations.
