York University’s Master of Social Work program offers both full-time and part-time Advanced Standing options, as well as a Two-Year MSW pathway designed for students who hold a four-year honours undergraduate degree in a related discipline but do not have a Bachelor of Social Work. Across both programs, students engage in an integrated learning model that combines academic coursework, supervised practicum placements, and a practice-based research paper, building a strong foundation for advanced professional practice in diverse social service environments.

The program prepares graduates for a wide range of careers, including child welfare, gerontology, international social work, family support services, community development, social policy, and anti-oppressive practice. Central to the curriculum is a commitment to diversity and inclusion, with particular attention to how race, class, ability, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, and spiritual or religious affiliation shape experiences of oppression and support. Students are encouraged to critically reflect on their own practice, understand social work knowledge as socially constructed, and develop the skills needed for ethical, equity-focused engagement with complex power dynamics in practice settings, while also gaining meaningful experience in applied research.

Admission Requirements

  • BSW or an equivalent honours undergraduate social work degree or an honours degree in another related discipline. Related disciplines may include Social Sciences, Sociology, Political Science, Public Policy, Gender Studies, Journalism, Education, International Development Studies, Health-related Studies, etc.
  • Minimum of two years of related social work experience (paid and/or voluntary) is preferred (but not required).

What You’ll Learn

  • Develop advanced clinical and community practice skills through integrated coursework, practicum placements, and applied research within York University’s MSW program.
  • Critically examine social work theory and practice through lenses of power, oppression, and socially constructed knowledge.
  • Build expertise in working with diverse populations across fields such as child welfare, mental health, gerontology, and community development.
  • Strengthen competencies in anti-oppressive, equity-focused practice informed by race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability perspectives.

York’s Engineering program was a solid, hands-on experience that really pushed me to learn by doing. Instead of just focusing on exams, a lot of the learning came from projects where we had to figure things out, debug our own mistakes, and make designs actually work. I picked up practical skills like coding, breaking down complex systems, and explaining technical ideas clearly to teammates. By the end of the program, I felt much more comfortable tackling new problems and learning on the fly, which has been one of the most useful outcomes after graduating.

I found York's Engineering program challenging but practical in a good way. I learned core skills like programming, circuit analysis, and system design, and got to apply them through hands-on labs and group projects. Working on design assignments and team-based projects helped me build real problem-solving skills and confidence that carried over into the workplace.
