Selkirk College’s Fine Woodworking program offers a focused and creative environment where students develop both technical skills and artistic sensibilities in woodworking. Over nine months, students gain a solid foundation in furniture and cabinet design, learning the theoretical principles, concepts, and practices that guide fine craftsmanship. Instruction emphasizes a blend of traditional techniques and modern technological advancements, preparing students to pursue apprenticeship opportunities in the cabinet makers (joiners) trade or launch careers as fine furniture builders.
Through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on shop experience, students apply their knowledge to construct cabinets and custom furniture pieces. The program encourages originality, quality, and attention to detail while introducing practical skills such as drafting with Computer-Aided Design (CAD), photographing work, and planning professional showcases. Graduates leave with a strong understanding of design, craftsmanship, and the professional practices necessary to succeed in the woodworking industry.
