The Best Driving Schools in Mississauga of 2024

By:
Last updated December 6, 2023

Wondering where to learn the rules of the road in Mississauga? Mississauga is lumped together with the Greater Toronto Area, but it’s not the same city as Toronto. Driving around Canada’s largest suburban municipality is a different experience, which means so is learning how to drive its streets.

Because Mississauga is a newer, more modern suburb, you’re not going to have to grapple as much with the narrower streets that are common in older cities like Toronto. It also has a lower population density, which can make traffic a little more manageable, but that’s offset by a public transit system that doesn’t have an underground subway or dedicated streetcar lanes.

In the winter months, Mississauga runs a comprehensive snow removal program that clears priority roads and sidewalks, on-street bike lanes, bus stops, pedestrian crossings, and specific trails within 12 to 24 hours of the snow stopping, while residential roads are cleared within 24 to 36 hours of the snow stopping. An online snow plow tracker allows residents and drivers alike to view a map of the city’s snow-clearing routes and track the progress of its snow clearing fleet.

If you decide you want to learn how to drive on the suburban streets of Mississauga, there are plenty of homegrown driving schools to choose from, as well as larger schools with a presence in the city that are approved by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

The minimum requirement for an MTO-approved Beginners’ Driver Education (BDE) course in Ontario is 40 hours, comprising 20 in-class, 10 hours in-vehicle and 10 hours of flexible instruction. Students can earn their G2 license in eight months after passing their written test, compared to 12 months for non-students.

Whether it’s driving in an older metropolis like Toronto (see our ranking of Toronto’s best driving schools) or a sprawling suburban city like Mississauga, driving is a critical life skill. Knowing how to drive can help you land a job and give you the freedom to go where you want, even if you don’t own your own vehicle.

The best driving schools will teach you how to navigate Mississauga with a range of learning options that include in-car instruction combined with classroom and online learning. Some schools even have simulators to get you comfortable behind the wheel.

If you think you can save money by learning to drive from a family or friend, consider that learning from a professional, skilled driving instructor creates a solid foundation of skills in a neutral environment.

Learning to drive from an MTO-approved driving school will also get you a break on your car insurance. In Ontario, new drivers who can prove they have completed a certified driving course can get discounts on their auto insurance ranging from 10 to 20 per cent – that’s as much as $400 to $1,200 annually.

Mississauga is home to many choices for government-approved driving schools with solid track records of preparing students for their road tests with flexible payment options and schedules. Here are some of our editorial team’s — and our learner community’s — top-rated selections.

Young Drivers of Canada

$ $ $ $

As the name suggests, Young Drivers of Canada (YD) is a national concern with plenty of locations serving Mississauga. The school has been teaching drivers for more than 50 years and boasts more than a million graduates.

YD students are taught to react and anticipate with lessons that include observational awareness and collision avoidance techniques, so they can always stay in control of the car. YD instructors have been trained to teach risk perception, head-on collision and rear crash avoidance, shoulder recovery, and a variety of braking techniques. YD re-trains its own driving instructors annually with its own internal recertification training course so they can keep pace with any changes to the world of driving.

YD’s “Collisionfree!” approach is not only available to novice drivers – it also provides driver improvement, re-testing, fleet training and cognitive training. As with all MTO-approved training, the school delivers drive education with a mix of in class, online and in-car instruction with flexible payment plans and scheduling.

What Students Are Saying

I took Young Drivers. From what I hear from others who took lessons elsewhere there are some key differences. The big one that I remember is emergency maneuvers. The instructors spend a lengthy lesson doing things like emergency braking and avoidance. They set up pylons in an empty parking lot and have you do things like drive towards them, and get up to 50km/hr. or so then they turn off the car so you have to avoid using no power steering. Another you had to avoid the pylons using only the emergency brake. Another you had to react to a coming rear and collision. High-speed braking was another. I was fortunate to do that lesson the day after an ice and snowstorm, so I had tougher conditions. It taught me things I still remember every winter. To me, it was worth the money. The best thing to do is get a complete breakdown of what you’re paying for. If all you want is to pass your test you can cheap out a bit, but if you want something more comprehensive consider it money well spent.

Tony was my driving instructor. He is an experience instructor and provided me with every information that was required for the test. He not only prepares you for driving test but also gives you tips for how to drive safe. But the best part is that he is really flexible. I told him that i have my test in 5 days and he took time out of his busy schedule. He even worked late night just to give me classes. I will give 5 out of 5 starts for Tony.

What Students Are Saying

I went to this school both for my G2 and G exam and I passed both times the firs try. Armin was my instructor for G2 and Max for G. They both really prepared me for my test to make sure i pass. They were great coaching me while i drive and pointing out how i need to be driving for the test to ensure I pass. The most important thing before you go for your G2 exam is that you are driving smoothly on the road and checking your mirrors often. Before you take your G test, make sure that you have been driving consistently by yourself in a regular city road. Max helped me prepare for proper merging, exiting, distance from one vehicle to another, checking mirrors so often. Thanks Ultimate Drivers for making my dreams come true.
