I was looking for an online course on digital marketing and social media to augment my professional experience as a journalist. As I live an hour from Toronto, I was looking for an online learning experience but had traditionally chosen in-class continuing education programs. The first course in this certificate program — SCS 2875 Foundations of Digital Communications Strategy & Social Media — proved to me that online could be as engaging and rewarding with a similar level of interaction with both instructor and fellow students. The instructor, Donna Papacosta, was energetic and brought enthusiasm to the course each week. As a successful professional in the area of digital marketing, Donna is a communications consultant who works with large companies on digital programs, including corporate podcasts, an area I was interested in learning more about for application in the workplace. She brought real-world scenarios to class every week and encouraged discussion from all students in each session. One of the more challenging group projects was to produce a short video in one three-hour time period with four other classmates working together virtually. The primary blogging project was a great hands-on experience on audience engagement using social media. I continue to refer to the textbooks for this program and have recommended them and the course to others. I firmly believe I secured a job in a digital marketing team at a large emerging consumer goods company based on the knowledge gained from this course.

  • Do I have to be a University of Toronto student or alumnus to apply for courses at the School of Continuing Studies?

    No. All adults are welcome to apply for courses at the School regardless of prior academic background.

  • Can I apply the courses I take at the School of Continuing Studies for credit towards a degree program at the University of Toronto?

    No. Courses taken at the School of Continuing Studies do not carry University of Toronto degree credit.

  • Will I gain admission to the University of Toronto if I take courses at the School of Continuing Studies?

    No. Acceptance into the University of Toronto cannot be attained by completing courses at the School of Continuing Studies. You must apply for admission to degree programs, either through the Office of Admissions and Awards or through the School of Graduate Studies.

  • Do I have to register in a certificate before taking courses?

    You do not have to register in a certificate before enrolling in courses that are requirements in the certificate program. When you have satisfied all certificate requirements in the prescribed time limit, you simply fill out the Certificate Request Form, send it to the School by email, fax or mail, and then wait for the certificate to be mailed to your preferred address. Although it is not necessary to register in a certificate before enrolling in courses, we do recommend that you notify us of your intention to pursue a certificate when you register for your first course. We will be able to track your progress and notify you of any updates or changes to the program.

  • Will the courses I take at the School of Continuing Studies affect my GPA at the University of Toronto?

    All courses taken through the School of Continuing Studies are non-degree, non-credit. Final grades achieved for the School’s courses will not affect your GPA for degree studies at the University of Toronto.

  • I have a degree from another country. Can your institution do an evaluation of my degree?

    Yes. The Comparative Education Service provides assessments of international academic qualifications and compares them to those offered in Canada, which helps employers to better understand our clients’ credentials.   • Can I get a student visa if I study at the School of Continuing Studies?

    Our full-time English as a Second Language Program is the only course or program offered by the School that may entitle you to qualify for a student visa. Check with the nearest Canadian visa office to make sure you have enough time to get the proper documents, if required. View the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website for more information.
