About
Pilot Training
If you’ve ever considered a career in the cockpit, now’s the time. Canada is experiencing significant shortages in skilled pilots and the demand is not only creating job opportunities, but also increasingly attractive compensation. One industry study estimated Canada is going to need 7,300 more pilots by 2025, and the competition from U.S. airlines is also helping pilots north of the 49th parallel secure significant wage increases; in just one example, pilots for leisure airline Sunwing bargained a 23 per cent pay hike in 2023, with a 2.5 per cent bump in 2024. So, if you’re considering a position with unbeatable office views, travel and high-tech training, you’re cleared for takeoff.
Canada is home to dozens of high-quality flight schools, both public and private, that offer pilot training, mentorship and career development opportunities to help you earn your commercial pilot’s licence (CPL). And if want to fly just for fun, there are plenty of schools for you as well. While programs vary, Canada’s top flight schools deliver the training to earn a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), Private Pilot Licence (PPL) as well as Flight Instructor Rating, Night Rating, Multi-engine Rating, Recreational Pilot Permits, Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) and more. Some even offer unique and exhilarating training in aerial acrobatics! You’ll develop your skills in cutting-edge flight simulators and a wide range of aircraft.
As a student of aviation, you can chart several different career paths. Of course, you can learn to fly land or sea planes – or potentially helicopters as well – and fly civilian aircraft, air ambulances, cargo planes or work in aerial photography, to name a few. You can also pass on your skills as a flight instructor, or apply your expertise to air traffic control or aviation inspection.
Given the wide range of career opportunities, pilot wages can vary greatly, and as noted above, could be rising significantly. At the moment, though, Talent.com reports the average pilot’s salary in Canada is a lofty $85,867 on average, and soaring as high as $133,000.
